SOME FACTS ABOUT STEM CELL RESEARCH

Stem cells are unique because they can do two things: make another cell like itself of make any number of cells with more specialized functions.
Stem cells can be found in human embryos that is life from conception to eight weeks of life; in umbilical cords which are usually discarded after live births; and in adults' bone marrow, blood, muscle, fat, nerves and even the pulp of baby teeth.
Using human embryos as a source for stem cell research ends the life of the tiny human 0-8 weeks old.
Using umbilical cord or adult stem cells for research does not end the life of the donors.
Research that has been done with human embryo stem cells has resulted in cancerous-like cells and has not enhanced human health.
Research that has been done with umbilical cord or adult stem cells has helped people with Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, juvenile diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia, heart damage, corneal damage, and more.
Human life at all stages is not an object.
Human life is a gift given by God.

AN UPDATE FROM THE USCCB

Recently the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA) reported that over 33 million Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) postcards were requested through their office and that they are still receiving and filling requests. In addition, our own Diocese of Toledo directors involved in social ministries joined 500 others from around the country in meetings with members of Congress last month on Capital Hill to address several social justice issues which included FOCA. They received clear confirmation that the message of the campaign was heard.
To augment the initial postcard campaign, the USCCB has launched an e-mail campaign urging Congress to maintain widely-supported pro-life policies. To send an e-mail or for more information on the USCCB’s pro-life e-mail campaign visit: www.usccb.org/postcard.

THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT (FOCA)

The Freedom of Choice Act (Senate Bill 1173 / House of Representatives Bill 1964) threatens human life. If passed, FOCA would:
1. Make void present laws protecting a woman from unsafe abortions and laws ensuring that she is informed about abortion.
2. Require taxpayers to pay for abortions.
3. Require states to allow “partial birth” and other late term abortions.
4. Require states to allow abortions by non-physicians.
5. Bar laws protecting a right of conscientious objection to perform an abortion.
6. Deny parents an opportunity to be involved in their minor daughter’s abortion decision.
Speaking out on behalf of Life and against FOCA is an important challenge facing us. Take the time to let your members of Congress know that their voice should speak for LIFE.

A Zygote - A Baby - A Life

When there is a new living organism of the human spieces, distinct from mother and father and ready to develop and mature if given a nurturing environment, there is the beginning of human life. With today's embryology, we recognize that new life begins at conception. The Catholic Church does not teach this as a matter of faith, but as a matter of objective fact.

Although there is no adorable face (yet), no tiny fingers (yet), no precious little feet (yet), this is the infant life that needs our voice, our hands, our support by offering assistance to all mothers and fathers in need.

A LETTER FROM A WITNESS OUTSIDE OF AN ABORTION CLINIC

Dear friends,
God is SO good! Tonight we were blessed to find out that a couple chose life, not death, for their child! Because this is a gift for all who pray for LIFE, I want to share this exciting moment with you. The couple drove in to the parking lot and parked near the alley. Nine people were present praying--7 in front and a counselor on either side of the parking lot. As the woman got out of the SUV, I asked her if I could give her information. She said, 'No. You're doing the right thing, but ....' and then she and a man (probably her husband from her subsequent conversation) walked towards the abortion center. I called after them, 'Trust in God! He'll get you through this.' and some other things I can't remember while Marcy, the other counselor called out, 'Choose life, not death.' It was only 5-10 minutes later when they came walking back to their vehicle. I asked, 'Is this good news? Is this good news?!?' She said, 'Yes.' I asked, 'Are you keeping your baby?!?' She said, 'Yes.' I was overjoyed--quite giddy, in fact. I then told her that if they needed anything, I had information about crisis pregnancy centers where they could go for help. She looked at me with a weary look and said in a tired voice, 'It's not about money. I have a job but we have a lot of kids right now and it's just so hard...' I told her that I knew it was hard but that if they would have gone through with the abortion, it would have been harder, that she would have looked at her children, knowing she had killed one of their siblings. I also said that God will bless them abundantly for this and that I would pray for her. (Please join me in praying for this family.) As they drove away, I probably acted like a fool, blowing them kisses and dropping to my knees but that's just how exciting it was! So many babies are killed there each week so to find out that a baby was given life instead--WOW! Thanks be to God!! This was such a gift--not only that the baby was saved from abortion but that God was sweet enough to have that couple leave when we were still there AND to share the good news with us! A 'kiss' from above! Isn't it just like our loving God to give us this beautiful message to encourage us to keep praying, to not give up. Those who were present were so excited; we all were leaving within 15 minutes and to have this happen right before we left--well, we knew that it was very special. God could have kept it hidden from us but He chose to share it with us--and so I share it with all of you sweet prayer warriors! You, too, are part of this! Please keep praying! In less than a month, we've been blessed to know of 2 babies that have parents who changed their minds! Who knows how many more have benefited from prayers! How many other mothers changed their minds before they even arrived at the abortion center?!? I hope that these encouraging 'turn arounds' will inspire you to get involved this fall in the 40 Days for Life pro-life event. As of yesterday, we are officially registered to participate so you can start signing up for hours now. Tell others about the event that re-invigorated the pro-life movement in Toledo--and the entire country! In Vitro Fertilization

Recently, an 8th Grade student asked me at a presentation of Theology of the Body why the Church was against in vitro fertilization. She shared that her mom had used that method so that she could be conceived and given life. I told her that the Church recognizes what a gift her life is and that the Church wants that for all life. I mentioned that zygotes, fertilized eggs, are not all treated with the respect that human lives deserve and as she was given. Many are discarded as a commodity, a product of the lab, and not life. The Church speaks for these most vulnerable, tiny lives!
